Returning to Audio Gourmet for a second time, we welcome back Specta Ciera with a new EP called 'The Tropical Air'.
Specta Ciera is Cambridge, US based artist Devin Underwood who first released here on Audio Gourmet back in 2010 with 'Meadow Return'.
Since then, Devin has branched out from netlabel and digital only material with CDr albums on labels such as I, Absentee and Secret Station.
'The Tropical Air' was born out of Devin's intentions to experiment with real-time improvisation. The result is comprised of a 90% live performance, in which Devin strived to become more comfortable with his studio gear, allowing him to get the most out of just a few elements.
The sessions were recorded during springtime, when the warm weather was just beginning to return and everything was beginning to grow again outside. Windows were being opened for the first time in a while, allowing the returning bird song to filter through indoors. The temperature outside became pleasant thanks to the sun, which created a warm reflective mood.
In the processing stage, Devin would usually spend a great deal of time overdubbing and layering additional detail. With 'The Tropical Air', he felt that these raw live recordings were very special to him in their original form.
Even the field recordings underneath the warm drones are a live recording, with microphones being fed into his delay chains and picking up the sounds of outside , his breathing and any movements.
Devin took the cover art photography just outside where the recordings were made, which features flowers just returning to bloom as spring began to set in. It was then edited to look like a painting here at Audio Gourmet HQ, so that hopefuly for long into the future both you and the artist will look back on this piece with a warm and nostalgic fondness.
With around fifteen years of recording experimental music through many different genres, Devin's unrestricted approach to sound has allowed him to delve through IDM, ambient, techno, field recordings and various other influences. We hope that this stripped back, warm and honest EP serves as the perfect short soundtrack for the warmer seasons and that you'll return to it again and again
Just to throw forward into the future, we're told that there is a collaboration between Specta Ciera and another artist previously featured on Audio Gourmet, Jacob Newman...
