Carter is an artist from Bristol, UK called Neil Carter, who has previously released on Somehow and Vent as well as some self-released material via his Bandcamp page. Neil has been experimenting with sound for the last 20 years but in recent times he has been refining his experiments into projects and releases. Neil ditched his previous laptop as a studio methods recently in favour of a modular system, focusing on generative and improvised recordings. He has become fascinated with exploring both repetition and randomness; the relationships between these two ideas. How the manipulation of time and chance events affects these things and creates evolving patterns. He has also working with more concrete, electro-acoustic based techniques involving found sound, field recordings and object, tape and mic manipulation.
Neil’s musical influences are wide, including John Cage, Pierre Schafer and John Coltrane alongside contemporary ‘Ambient’ artists such as Marcus Fischer, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Orla Wren. Additionally, he finds the Bristol experimental scene deeply inspiring and exciting, with its wealth of very talented individuals and collectives that play and create a wonderful array of music, sound and art. Neil occasionally plays live himself and has recently been involved in organising an improvised/DIY/experimental music, sound and film weekender called The Bristol Hum.

The Summer Before The Summer is a brief but sprawling arrangement of dusty, melancholy electro-acoustics created by blending a modular system with live radio signals, prepared electric motor, an acoustic spring reverb and found object manipulation. These were all collected via contact mics and electro-magnetic pickups, processed through the modular system, which was both triggering events with the motor and radio and being triggered itself (to produce it’s own sound) by the sounds being created. In its short duration, the all-improvised The Summer Before Summer is an unrepeatable moment in time, a perfect accompaniment for a brief pause or teabreak.
