about

Ben McElroy is a musician and artist that resides in a big old house in Nottingham, UK, with wooden floors and noisy windows. Ben is getting ready to release a couple of albums on well-known labels but to date, he released his debut ‘Bird-stone’ on our limited edition sister imprint Whitelabrecs. Ben has been making music since his early teens and he cites Pauline Oliveros, Sharron Kraus and Ralph Vaughn Williams as some of his influences and he also works as part of Seas Of Mirth and The Four Fishermen.

Bird-stone is a musical record, full of lovingly crafted folk detail but here in ‘Songs of Iceland’, Ben strived to create something more minimal. The work is coined from various leftovers on his hard-drive and the opening title track ‘Songs of Iceland’ was originally a piece he was unhappy but he worked relentlessly on it until it emerged as a good starting point for this EP.

On the face of it, Songs of Iceland has a very clear concept, with its story-telling passages of music along with the stunning Icelandic site photography provided by Natasha Edmondson and one track in particular perhaps a reference to the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland back in 2010. However, Ben says he hasn’t been to Iceland and he has not laid out a clear concept for this short EP. Instead, he’d prefer this to be open to interpretation as you draw your own conclusions.
