about

Paper Relics consists of brothers Harry and Stuart Towell. Stuart is a skilled guitarist and Harry is renowned for his solo work as Spheruleus and for running the Audio Gourmet netlabel.

Almost a year before this digital release was made available, the brothers set about recording as Paper Relics. Their debut EP 'Recovered Artefact' was made available for free through Audio Gourmet and whilst this was out, worked continued on what would eventually become 'Over Exposure', released in the summer of 2011 on Time Released Sound.

The album is inspired by the family history at Ketton in Rutland, UK and the childhood memories spent there that the Towell brothers so cherish. The farm itself is set for demise, with an approved housing development pending - soon all that will remain is the family memories and this tributary set of recordings.

Stuart's languid pseudo-folk/blues guitar compositions are accompanied by field recordings and additional instrument sounds performed by elder sibling Harry.
The album is deeply personal and this was reflected in the packaging of the CD versions available through Time Released Sound - with the hand-sewn booklet version including old rural photography, 100 year old botanical prints, collaged wallpaper pieces, handwritten naturalist notes all housed inside a special personalised envelope. They sold out very quickly, like much of Time Released Sound's special editions but there are still some beautiful digipak versions available which feature actual photography of the farm from the seventies, taken by their father Baz. You can purchase a copy here: timereleasedsound.com/shop/releases/paper-relics/

If you tend to prefer digital for whatever reason, you can do so here though the Audio Gourmet Bandcamp account. We have compiled a selection of bonus artwork assigned for each individual track - including some further examples of Baz's 70s farm-based photography.
We have also arranged three remixes from talented friends:
>Prolific sound artist Pleq, from Poland restructures 'Fading', dropping the guitar to explore the violin and harmonica textures further whilst adding some delicate chimes and light crackle/glitching.

>Well travelled Greek artist Byron Felt has contributed a remix of 'Last Of The Grain' that he recorded for us in late 2010. It is barely reminiscant of the original but somehow fits beautifully with the overall feel to the album and really adds something with the use of field recordings and electric guitar.

>Finally, Jeff Stonehouse, the man behind Listening Mirror turns in a deeper example of 'Last Of The Grain'. It is the longest track on the album, exploring a palette of beautifully droning textures in a fashion that has won Jeff so much deserved acclaim.
